In a bid to fortify its national player safety net, Sweden’s gambling authority, Spelinspektionen, has announced strict new technical regulations for verifying players against the Spelpaus.se self-exclusion register. Effective August 1, 2026, all licensed operators must use official credentials and a mandatory Application Programming Interface (API) for every check.
Strengthening the “Duty of Care”
The new rule moves away from manual or fragmented verification methods. By requiring a direct technical link via the regulator’s mandatory API, Spelinspektionen ensures that no self-excluded player can slip through the cracks of a digital lobby.
This technical shift coincides with an expanded credit prohibition under the Gaming Act and an ongoing investigation into how major brands like Mr. Green and Mr. Vegas handle customers with high deposit limits.
Long-Term Progress in Harm Reduction
Despite the increased regulatory pressure, new data suggests Sweden’s responsible gaming framework is working. A recent study by economist Ola Nevander, presented by the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS), found that adult gambling-related harm has decreased significantly.
Using the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), the study revealed the harm rate dropped from 2.2% in 2008 to 1.3% in 2021, even as the industry’s overall volume expanded.
The August 1 update is seen as the next logical step in maintaining this downward trend. By automating the verification process, Sweden continues to lead Europe in applying data-led, technically rigorous player protection standards.
