In a first for the Macau gaming industry, MGM China has implemented a fully localized sustainability system that transforms used playing cards into recycled packaging materials. Partnering with Fnetlink Technology Co Ltd, the operator has moved beyond simple disposal to create a “circular economy” loop that keeps shredding and fiber production entirely within Macau.
Turning 3,000 Tons of Waste into Resources
The system formalizes development work that began in 2023, utilizing an automated shredding setup that requires zero water. Once processed, the shredded cards are turned into high-quality recycled fibers used for eco-friendly packaging. MGM China expects the program to achieve a 100% recycling rate, processing approximately 3,000 tons of cards annually.
The initiative was officially launched on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by government officials and senior executives. CEO and Executive Director Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng noted that the project is a practical example of using technology to drive operational efficiency rather than treating environmental measures as an “add-on”.
Supporting Macau’s Economic Diversification
MGM China believes that projects like this upcycling program can contribute to the city’s broader goal of diversifying its industrial base. By anchoring the entire process locally, the model supports homegrown technical capabilities and creative options within the supply chain.
Feng stated during the launch:
“MGM China has consistently looked for ways to apply innovative technology to sustainability challenges… [this program can] bring more creativity and real options into that diversification effort”.
