Vietnam’s casino industry is witnessing a steady period of expansion, with much of its growth trajectory remaining firmly anchored in the spending power of South Korean visitors.
Integrated resorts and urban e-gaming clubs across the nation are currently operating with a heavy reliance on Korean players, who consistently represent the largest share of gaming customers under Vietnam’s strictly enforced foreigner-only entry system.
The Korean Foundation of the Market
Revenue from Korean gamblers has seen a marked increase over the past year in the casino industry of Vietnam. According to Lion Club’s External Marketing Head, Scott Choi, this trend is a direct reflection of their status as the primary revenue pillar for the local gaming market. While travel activity picks up steam globally, Vietnam’s tourism profile is subtly shifting. Choi notes that while the return of Chinese gamblers has slightly adjusted market percentages, the Korean base remains an immovable foundation.
Evolving Player Demographics and Shifting Behaviors
The market is currently undergoing a process of segmentation. Operators are observing a widening gap between VIP/premium mass gamblers, often business executives in manufacturing, and budget-conscious players. Interestingly, the mass segment has become highly attentive to logistical costs, prioritizing airfare, hotel packages, and rebates when selecting their destination.
Urban Clubs vs. Integrated Resorts
A distinct disparity exists between the habits of gamers at massive integrated resorts versus urban e-gaming clubs. Resorts like The Grand Ho Tram or Hoiana attract tourists seeking a holistic leisure experience including golf and dining. At the same time, urban clubs in cities like Ho Chi Minh City draw frequent visitors, including expatriates, who focus almost exclusively on high-intensity gambling with high turnover on the tables.
Digital Transformation and Infrastructure
Operators are responding to these shifts with an aggressive digital push. Many have launched mobile apps to facilitate direct communication with Korean customers via preferred chat tools. Looking forward, the opening of Long Thanh International Airport is expected to be a game-changer. Choi predicts:
“There will be at least a 15% increase in the number of customers in the e-gaming clubs and casinos. This is because the Long Thanh International Airport opened in Dong Nai Province. There are going to be more direct flights from Korea to Vietnam.”
