The Swedish government has officially named Peter Knutsson as the new Director General of Spelinspektionen (The Swedish Gambling Authority).
Knutsson, who currently serves as the national advertising ombudsman, will assume the six-year post on August 17, 2026, serving through late 2032.
A Portfolio of Public Administration
Knutsson brings over two decades of managerial experience to the role, specializing in consumer legislation and public administration. His previous tenures include serving as Head of Unit at the Ministry of Finance and advisory roles at the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority. This background is seen as vital as Sweden enters a period of heightened market scrutiny.
Madelaine Tunudd, chairwoman of the Gambling Authority, welcomed the transition:
“With the solid experience Peter Knutsson has from… the Ministry of Finance, consumer affairs and most recently the Advertising Ombudsman, this will be very good for the authority”.
Regulatory Challenges Ahead
The appointment of Peter Knutsson coincides with data showing that one in six Swedes engaged in online gambling in 2025. Knutsson will be tasked with leading the authority through significant amendments to the Gambling Act, aimed at dismantling unlicensed operations and strengthening enforcement.
Acting Director General Johan Röhr will oversee the transition to ensure a “seamless start” for the new leadership.
