Panamanian Football Shaken by Match-Fixing Allegations and Public Accusations

The integrity of Panamanian football is currently under intense scrutiny following a high-profile scandal involving Alianza FC and San Miguelito.

While Alianza secured a 3-2 victory, the result has been overshadowed by an extraordinary series of events in the final minutes of the match, leading to direct accusations of match-fixing.

The “Own Goal” That Sparked a Crisis

The controversy centers on an unexpected own goal scored by a San Miguelito player in the dying moments of the game. The suspicious nature of the play immediately triggered backlash from fans and teammates alike. Gustavo Herrera, a teammate of the goalkeeper involved, José Calderón, took the unprecedented step of publicly accusing his fellow player of corruption.

In a scathing video message that has since gone viral, Herrera stated:

“Fixers, leave football. The love for football is carried in the heart, but many have lost it. I am speaking by name: José Calderón is a match-fixer, and he is not the only one.”

Herrera continued his emotional plea by questioning the legacy being left for the next generation:

“Aren’t you ashamed? You’re doing it openly now. Everyone sees a player with experience, someone who once represented the country. Is that the example for younger players? This is very sad. There are many players who work hard to progress and achieve their dreams.”

Calderón’s Defense and the Official Inquiry

José Calderón eventually issued an official statement to address the mounting pressure. While he admitted to the physical error on the pitch, he vehemently denied any criminal intent.

“I express my sincere apologies and fully assume responsibility for what was strictly a sporting and unintentional error. I categorically reject any attempt to link this action to conduct contrary to the integrity of the sport.”

The Liga Panameña de Fútbol has responded by launching a formal investigation. Adopting a “zero tolerance” approach, league officials emphasized that match-fixing “undermines the credibility, fairness, and fundamental values of football.”

The investigation is being managed by the Integrity Office and the Disciplinary Commission, with authorities vowing to address these challenges with “determination and concrete actions.”
