The task force would define “under” bets as wagers where the winning outcome requires an athlete to fall below a specific statistical threshold, such as points, rebounds, or yards. The body will study:
- The prevalence of and revenue from such wagers in New York.
- Integrity risks and the role of fraud detection systems.
- The harassment of players, specifically collegiate athletes, on social media.
Controversy and Integrity Concerns
The bill arrives following high-profile scandals, including the 2025 bribery indictments of former Cleveland Guardians players and match-fixing incidents involving the NBA’s Terry Rozier. The proposed task force would consist of four directors, with appointments due by July 1. A final report would be submitted by December 31, 2026.
