Amusement and gaming operator MERKUR Casino UK has extended its grassroots funding pledge to Hull Zingari Cricket Club, committing a total of £2,800 to the amateur sports group through its ongoing MERKUR Community outreach initiative.
Sustaining Grassroots Infrastructure
Established in 1896 by workers across Hull’s industrial dockside district, Hull Zingari Cricket Club has served as a cornerstone of the regional sporting landscape for over a century. Operating out of its Chanterlands Avenue grounds since 1910, the club maintains a strictly amateur status, providing youth sports development pipelines since 1977 for local children starting from as early as six years old.
The latest financial installment of £938 will go toward purchasing 24 match-grade cricket balls mandatory for official senior league play. More importantly, the funding buffer allows the club to maintain flat membership costs amid inflationary pressures, opening participation to all socio-economic groups. The capital also protects the club’s active community inclusion initiatives, which include local integration projects for refugees and asylum seekers, as well as its landmark annual “Asia Cup” tournament designed to foster cultural connection through sport.
A Vital Community Contribution
Laurence Wilkinson, Treasurer of Hull Zingari Cricket Club, highlighted the immense financial overhead required to keep an amateur club operational across multiple divisions:
“To run our cricket club we are required to use a new cricket ball for each match for the first, second, and third teams. Each season has 22 matches, so as you can imagine it is the main expense of the club to keep the teams functioning. With MERKUR’s support, it helps significantly towards us being able to run our club. It means we don’t have to pass on the costs to the members and ensures that everyone is able to participate, opening the club to all.”
MERKUR’s Community programme is funded through corporate allocations alongside voluntary customer contributions collected across its retail gaming venues, distributing £30,572.53 across 30 grassroots organizations so far in 2026.
Mark Schertle, COO at MERKUR, expressed pride in backing a club with such deep historical and social impact:
“At MERKUR, we are committed to giving back to the communities we serve, particularly by supporting those who create a positive difference. Hull Zingari is a perfect example of creating a meaningful impact on local communities and working to bring people together from all backgrounds through their collective love of the sport is a great thing to see. We are delighted that our additional donation can ensure that the club continues to do so.”
