Malaysia Issues Final Warning to Meta Over Prohibited Online Gambling Content on Facebook

The Government of Malaysia has issued a strict final directive demanding that global tech conglomerate Meta Platforms immediately pull down all unauthorized online gambling advertisements and fraudulent marketing campaigns from its Facebook social network.

National Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that federal regulators are prepared to initiate formal legal proceedings against the social media giant if it fails to cooperate rapidly with state directives.

Facebook Houses 81% of Illegal Gambling Adverts

Speaking during the high-level Inter-Agency Retreat on Combating Online Scams, Minister Fadzil clarified that the scale of illegal marketing material has reached an unprecedented magnitude that threatens national economic security. He stated that any subsequent prosecution or regulatory block would be executed directly by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The ministry publicized telemetry documenting the extreme volume of prohibited content circulating on the platform. From January 1, 2026, until May 23, 2026, Malaysian enforcement authorities filed a staggering 271,472 formal takedown requests to Facebook. Crucially, over 91% of these requests were connected straight to the presence of online scams and unregulated gambling networks.

Federal monitoring groups discovered that a substantial 81% of all illegal gambling-related material detected across the entire Malaysian internet was located directly on Facebook, placing the platform at the center of the country’s legislative crackdown.

Massive Economic Damage Triggers New Cabinet Coordination Plan

Fadzil disclosed that Malaysian consumers lost an astronomical $640 million to digital fraud rings over the course of 2025. The most common crimes impacting citizens include fraudulent retail sales, deceptive investment schemes, and underground digital gambling traps. This severe drain on local capital has forced the ministry to accelerate a comprehensive response strategy.

To combat the wave of illegal material, the Government of Malaysia is finalizing the formation of a specialized central coordination committee.

This proposed body, which will be formally presented to the Malaysian cabinet for structural approval over the coming days, is engineered to synthesize enforcement responses by linking regulatory bodies, commercial banking institutions, federal law enforcement agencies, and national telecommunications networks to intercept illegal data distribution paths before they reach the public.
