Major League Soccer (MLS) has sent a shockwave through the North American sports landscape by issuing lifetime bans to former players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah.
The decision follows a comprehensive investigation into “extensive gambling” activities that compromised the league’s strict integrity protocols during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
A Premeditated Breach of Integrity
The investigation was triggered by suspicious betting alerts flagged by the league’s integrity partners. A central piece of evidence involved a match on October 19, 2024, where both players reportedly wagered on Jones to receive a yellow card—an event that subsequently occurred during the game. Beyond personal wagering, the league found that Jones and Yeboah “likely shared confidential information” with outside bettors regarding their intent to be cautioned by officials.
The timeline of the prohibited activity spans two seasons. In 2024, both athletes were teammates at Columbus Crew. By 2025, Yeboah had moved to Los Angeles FC, where the illicit activity allegedly continued.
League Response and Future Safeguards
While the league clarified that there was no evidence suggesting these bets influenced the final scores of matches, the breach was deemed severe enough to warrant the ultimate sporting penalty. MLS Commissioner Don Garber reaffirmed the league’s zero-tolerance stance:
“The League remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity. We will continue to enforce our policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans”.
Both Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah had been on administrative leave pending the review’s conclusion, which ultimately found them in direct violation of the league’s gambling policy.
