Choi Byung-hwan has officially taken office as the new Chairman of South Korea’s National Gambling Control Commission (NGCC).
Assuming the role on April 28 at the Government Complex in Gwacheon, Choi will lead the commission’s 7th term, focusing on a mandate that balances industry sustainability with robust consumer protection.
A Coordinated Regulatory Vision
Choi Byung-hwan, the commission’s 10th chairman, brings a deep background in senior government service, having previously served as First Vice Minister at the Office for Government Policy Coordination and as a presidential aide. In his inaugural address, he outlined a clear path for his three-year term.
“The commission will actively work to build a user protection system that ensures all citizens are safeguarded from the side effects of gambling,” Choi stated.
Balanced Civilian Membership
To ensure a multifaceted response to gambling regulation, the commission has added eleven civilian members with specialized backgrounds. These include experts in:
- Addiction Prevention and Treatment
- Legal and Policy Coordination
- Information Technology (IT)
- Public Communication
This diverse panel is tasked with addressing the “side effects” of gambling, such as addiction and illegal offenses, while supporting the sector’s healthy development. Choi’s appointment signals a government-wide push for a more coordinated and technically sophisticated approach to gambling oversight through April 2029.
