A legislative proposal to implement a nationwide ban on all gambling ads has advanced to the Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) in the Brazilian Senate.
If passed, the bill threatens to destabilize the financial foundations of Brazilian football, with top-tier clubs estimated to lose over R$ 842 million in sponsorship revenue.
A Crisis for Série A Commercials
Currently, roughly 60% of Campeonato Brasileiro Série A clubs, including giants like Flamengo, São Paulo FC, and Palmeiras, rely on betting brands as their primary “master” shirt sponsors.
The proposed Brazilian gambling ads ban would extend far beyond stadiums, prohibiting gambling ads on TV, radio, social media, and even the pre-installation of betting apps on smartphones.
The Call for Balanced Regulation
Industry leaders are urging for a more targeted approach. Bernardo Cavalcanti Freire, legal advisor to the ANJL, stated:
“The abusive advertising and, above all, the advertising conducted by clandestine companies should be repressed.”
Nickolas Tadeu Ribeiro de Campos,Chairman of Ana Gaming, added that “clear and proportionate rules are essential… to establish a transparent and sustainable market”. As the bill moves forward, the Brazilian sports industry remains on high alert over its long-term financial viability.
