We have breaking news from Brazil that touches upon a new update regarding responsible gambling in the country which concerns every online gaming operator currently providing services in Brazil.

Namely, the Brazilian Secretariat of Public Affairs (SPA) has just released Ordinance SPA/MF 1.231 which introduces extensive rules on responsible gambling, marketing, advertising, and communication for online gaming operators.

The new ordinance marks a new era of security, transparency, and safety for online gaming enthusiasts in Brazil, as it ensures a more regulated and controlled gaming environment in a country where iGaming has been booming in the past several years.

A vital step toward ensuring not just a safer gaming environment for Brazilians, Ordinance SPA/MF 1.231 is a law that touches on pressing global ESG issues and promotes responsibility, and more importantly, is beneficial to both gaming enthusiasts and operators who fight for a transparent and secure gaming ecosystem.

With that being said, let’s have a look at some of the key highlights from the new ordinance:

Mandatory Responsible Gambling Initiatives: Betting operators in Brazil are now mandated to regularly implement Responsible Gambling initiatives, despite the fact that the ordinance does not specify a required amount of marketing dedicated to this cause.

User Restriction Mechanisms: Gaming operators must offer tools for both self-restriction and operator-enforced restrictions. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Betting limits over specific time periods
  • Setting limits on money deposited and invested
  • Setting limits on bet amounts

Behavioural Monitoring: Monitoring for signs of harmful betting behaviour or addiction is now mandatory. Operators are now mandated and have the responsibility to intervene and if neccessary block users who display gaming addiction or harmful behaviour.

Dedicated Responsible Gambling Section: Operators must provide a Responsible Gambling section on their gaming platforms. This section should offer guides on responsible gambling, tests to self-assess potentially harmful behaviour, and external resources for organizations that can assist players with gambling addiction.
