Leading US sportsbook FanDuel has announced the launch of Bet Protect+, a sophisticated product feature offering comprehensive injury protection for player prop bets.
Launched strategically ahead of the NBA playoffs, the feature addresses a long-standing point of friction for bettors: the loss of control that occurs when a selected athlete is sidelined mid-game.
Technical Mechanics and Cash Refunds
Unlike traditional promotional “bad beat” offers that often only cover the first half of a game, Bet Protect+ applies to the entire duration of the event. Users can opt-in by paying a 3 percent premium on their stake. If a player leaves due to injury at any point, single bets are issued as a cash refund. In the case of parlays, the affected selection is removed, and the remaining odds are automatically recalculated.
This design was driven by internal data showing that the third quarter is often the highest-risk period for professional basketball injuries, a timeframe usually excluded from standard industry protections.
A Focus on User Control
FanDuel has clarified that the premium is purely an actuarial cost-coverage mechanism rather than a margin driver. The feature is currently live for NBA pre-match and in-play markets across most active US jurisdictions, with plans to scale the technology into other professional sports leagues later this year.
Jon Sadow, Sportsbook Product Vice President at FanDuel, explained the philosophy behind the innovation:
“Even with the most well-planned bet, the most comprehensive research, the best hunch, it can all get squashed by an unexpected injury. We want to allow our customers to regain that loss of control.”
By introducing paid, optional safeguards, FanDuel is leaning into a broader 2026 trend where transparency and user-defined risk management become primary drivers of platform loyalty in the competitive US digital betting market.
