Slovakia’s gambling regulator has issued a stern warning to the nation’s sports organizations, initiating one of the toughest compliance crackdowns in years.
Libuša Baranová, the newly appointed Director General of the Gambling Regulation Office, has explicitly instructed sports leagues, clubs, and federations to immediately terminate all commercial partnerships with unlicensed gambling operators or face severe penalties under the Gambling Act.
Baranová used her first public address to set a definitive tone for her tenure. She emphasized that sports organizations have become a “high visibility resource” for foreign, unlicensed operators seeking to target Slovakian players without regulatory approval.
Her directive is comprehensive: every sponsorship deal, jersey logo, and stadium banner must be reviewed. As per the regulator, if a gambling brand does not hold a valid individual license in Slovakia, its branding must be removed without delay.
The Gambling Act empowers the regulator to impose fines of up to €250,000 for unlawful sponsorships, a penalty Baranová made clear she is prepared to enforce.
The crackdown highlights a long-standing issue where sponsorships serve as a gateway for gambling brands to build credibility.
While major leagues already partner with legal operators like Niké and Tiposport, the regulator is focused on foreign brands that bypass the Slovakian licensing system yet appear prominently on kits and digital channels. These partnerships allow unlicensed entities to strengthen their market presence and target new customer groups illegally.
This enforcement action arrives amidst a period of legislative uncertainty. President Peter Pellegrini recently vetoed a gambling reform bill intended to modernize the market, citing insufficient player protections.
With the bill returned to the National Council, Baranová is keen to ensure strict adherence to the existing framework in the interim. Sports bodies now have a limited window to conduct full audits of their commercial relationships and ensure compliance.
For many clubs reliant on sponsorship income, this directive may necessitate a significant strategic pivot, but for the regulator, transparency and legal oversight remain non-negotiable priorities for the sector’s future.
