International gaming technology leader Novomatic AG today announced the successful completion of its acquisition of the French-based Vikings Casinos group.
The finalization of this significant deal, which received all necessary approvals from state authorities, marks a major step in Novomatic’s strategic expansion into the robust French gaming market.
Through this acquisition, Novomatic incorporates the entire portfolio of Vikings Casinos, which includes ten land-based casinos, a dedicated workforce of over 300 employees, and an arsenal of approximately 1,000 gaming terminals.
The newly acquired properties are situated in various locations across France, including Bourbon-Lancy, Houlgate, and Les Sables-d’Olonne, enhancing Novomatic’s presence in one of Europe’s most dynamic gaming regions.
Stefan Krenn, a member of the Novomatic Executive Board, commented on the move, stating it aligns with the company’s objectives for sustainable growth and international diversification. The acquisition provides Novomatic with a substantial operational base to further deploy its diverse range of gaming products and solutions.
This strategic investment unfolds against a backdrop of significant evolution within the French gambling sector. According to a 2024 report by the national regulator, Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), the market generated an impressive €14 billion in revenue.
The landscape is also poised for further change with the proposed legalization of online casino gaming, which includes a considerable 55.6% tax rate on turnover as part of the nation’s 2025 budget.
Stefan Krenn, Novomatic Executive Board Member, said:
The acquisition of Vikings Casinos is a key part of our efforts to build up Novomatic’s presence on international markets in a targeted manner. France is one of the most dynamic and challenging gaming markets in Europe. By making this investment, we are not only reinforcing our leading position in Europe but also demonstrating our clear commitment to our long-term global expansion strategy.
While the online sector shows booming growth, particularly in sports betting, which saw a 19% revenue increase, the ANJ is also focused on responsible gaming, addressing the estimated 1.2 million problem gamblers in the country. Novomatic’s entry with an expanded land-based portfolio positions it strategically within this lucrative and evolving market.
Established in Falaise in 1998, the Vikings Casinos group is one of the leading casino operators in France and has over 300 employees. The company currently operates around 1,000 gaming terminals in more than 10 live casinos across the country, including prime locations along the Côte d’Azur.
The acquisition will enable NOVOMATIC to substantially enlarge its portfolio of services in one of Europe’s largest gaming regions and forge ahead with its international growth strategy.
