GambleAware, the gambling harm prevention charity, has released a comprehensive report and new specialist resources designed to significantly enhance support and treatment for neurodivergent individuals experiencing gambling-related harm.

This major initiative follows research confirming that individuals with conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or autism face a heightened risk of developing gambling problems compared to the neurotypical population.

The charity’s research revealed that the motivation for gambling among neurodivergent individuals is often complex and distinct. It can serve as a mechanism for coping with social isolation, establishing a preferred daily routine, or as a strategy for managing emotional or sensory needs.

However, the very traits associated with neurodivergence. including impulsivity, a tendency towards hyperfocus, and a preference for structured, stimulating environments, can tragically contribute directly to the development of problematic gambling behaviours.

The research further indicates that individuals with ADHD or autism were found to be approximately twice as likely to experience gambling-related harm than their peers.

A critical finding of the report highlights the substantial barriers that impede neurodivergent individuals from seeking necessary assistance. These obstacles include a lack of awareness regarding specialist services, coupled with significant stigma and a fear of judgment, which collectively prevent many from accessing formal support.

To address this critical gap in treatment efficacy, the newly published resources were developed collaboratively by IFF Research and Ara Recovery for All, in partnership with the University of Bristol. These resources include specific training materials, practical toolkits, and case studies tailored for therapists and practitioners working on the front lines of gambling harm treatment.

The report establishes six key principles for delivering effective and inclusive support.

These guidelines emphasize understanding diverse communication needs, ensuring absolute clarity in all correspondence, prioritizing client autonomy, integrating sensitivity to sensory requirements, promoting peer support networks, and requiring comprehensive staff training in neurodiversity awareness.

This evidence-based approach is intended to customize treatment, ensuring it is as effective as possible for this particularly vulnerable population.

Anna Hargrave, GambleAware CEO:

The new report highlights the complex link between neurodivergence and gambling. Characteristics of neurodivergence like impulsivity, hyperfocus, social difficulties and a need for stimulation drive gambling behaviour and increase harms, while stigma, shame and lack of tailored support further isolate neurodivergent people and make it harder for them to seek help.
