India’s Enforcement Directorate Expands Probe into Major Gaming Firms

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India has significantly escalated its investigation into the online gaming sector, conducting coordinated searches across multiple cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, and Gurugram.

What initially began as routine inquiries has evolved into a comprehensive probe targeting the operational machinery and financial practices of major gaming platforms, including Gameskraft and WinZO.

Investigators of the Enforcement Directorate visited corporate offices and the residences of senior executives, seizing hard drives, internal logs, and email records.

The scope of the inquiry has broadened beyond basic compliance to include detailed questions regarding Random Number Generator (RNG) certification and banking documentation. Authorities reportedly encountered delays in cooperation at certain locations, adding tension to the proceedings.

A primary focus of this expanded investigation is the integrity of the gaming algorithms. The ED is scrutinizing how game outcomes are generated and whether systems are vulnerable to manipulation.

This line of inquiry aligns with recent police complaints filed by users alleging unfair gameplay disadvantages.

Consequently, operators are now required to provide technical explanations of their internal mechanics before the new regulatory framework, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA) 2025, has been fully notified.

Simultaneously, the investigation is tracking financial flows to detect potential money laundering. The ED is mapping transactions between players, platforms, and third-party intermediaries, with a specific emphasis on cryptocurrency channels. Any discrepancies in reporting or unexplained transfers are being treated as priority concerns.

The aggressive enforcement action places the Indian gaming industry in a precarious position. Companies are attempting to navigate a transitional period where enforcement is intensifying while the legal rulebook remains under construction.

The industry now faces the dual pressure of immediate compliance demands from the ED and the looming implementation of PROGA 2025, forcing operators to prepare for a regulatory future that is not yet fully defined.
