Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA) is set to modernize its entire lottery system through a strategic partnership with Chinese technology leaders Genlot Game Technology and Huawei.
The initiative, spearheaded by NLA Director General Mohammed Abdul-Salam, aims to advance the authority’s digital agenda, extend regulated lottery services to rural areas, and combat the prevalence of illegal paper-based operations that have long challenged the sector’s integrity.
The collaboration was solidified following a high-level visit to Shenzhen, China, in May 2025.
During the visit, the NLA delegation was introduced to Genlot’s secure Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, which are specifically designed to function effectively in environments with limited infrastructure.
Concurrently, Huawei presented its comprehensive digital ecosystem, featuring advanced AI tools, cloud platforms, and robust cybersecurity infrastructure.
The integration of these technologies is expected to create a secure, scalable, and seamless operational framework for the NLA.
This digital overhaul is driven by an urgent need to address systemic issues, including significant revenue loss to unregulated operators and a decline in public trust.
As a key contributor to national development funds, the lottery’s modernization is crucial for Ghana’s economy.
The implementation roadmap for the reform is already underway, with plans to establish a technical committee, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Huawei Ghana, and finalize procurement timelines with Genlot.
The plan also includes pilot projects and training programs to ensure local capacity is built to manage the new, modernized system.
