The Joint Gambling Authority of the States (GGL), Germany’s federal gambling regulator, has published a comprehensive new online resource aimed at helping the public identify and report unlicensed gambling operators.
Titled “Illegal Gambling on the Internet, Recognize, Avoid, Report,” the brochure is designed for consumers as well as professionals working in addiction prevention and counseling centers.
Empowering Consumers
The primary goal of the initiative is to raise awareness about the specific markers that distinguish illegal black-market brands from licensed German operators. The GGL’s guide details the deceptive practices often used by unlicensed providers, such as misleading website designs and aggressive incentive mechanisms intended to circumvent legal protections and lock players into their services.
“The GGL explains these strategies to empower consumers to recognise and avoid such offers early on,” the regulator stated in a press release. By educating the public on these tactics, the GGL hopes to reduce the flow of traffic to the black market.
A Call for Vigilance
The resource also provides clear instructions on how to report suspicious websites directly to the GGL for investigation. The German regulator has issued a broad appeal to the public to remain vigilant, particularly during periods of high digital usage. “The GGL appeals to the public to be vigilant… and to protect themselves from financial and personal harm,” the statement added.
This initiative represents the latest effort by the GGL to tighten its grip on the German market, ensuring that players are channeled toward the safe, regulated environment established by the Interstate Treaty on Gambling. The brochure is available immediately for download via the GGL website.
