
Police in Panchkula arrested four men for allegedly participating in illegal gambling late on the night of August 16. Authorities also seized cash from the scene during the operation, which took place in the Indira Colony of Sector 16.
The incident was confirmed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Srishti Gupta, in a statement reported by The Tribune.
According to the official police report, the arrests were made at approximately 11 pm. The raid was conducted by a team from the Sector-16 police post, led by in-charge Sinharaj, after receiving a tip-off about organized gambling activity taking place near Labour Chowk.
The four individuals were apprehended at a tower located next to a tubewell. The accused have been identified as Sonu, Lekhraj, Sumit, and Arvind, all of whom are residents of Indira Colony in the adjacent Sector 17.
During the operation, authorities recovered RS 13,780 (approximately US$165) from the individuals. Following the arrests, a case was officially registered against the four men at the Sector-14 police station under Section 13 of the Gambling Act.
Illegal gambling is an offense under the Punjab Gambling Act of 1867, which is applicable in the state of Haryana, and can result in fines and imprisonment. An investigation into the matter is now underway.
DCP Gupta commented on the arrests, stressing that the Panchkula Police are maintaining a strict zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of unlawful activity.
She added that gambling, betting, and drug abuse have a detrimental effect on the fabric of society and that offenders will not be spared under any circumstances. The four accused men remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
