The Spanish Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), Spain’s gambling regulator, has launched its 2025 research grant programme for responsible gambling, which offers €1.05 million to fund studies aimed at battling gambling-related harm.
The initiative was officially announced in the State Gazette on 17 May, and it’s part of Spain’s broader responsible gambling strategy under the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and Agenda 2030.
Eligible applicants include research institutions, non-profits, and other eligible organizations, with the applications being open until 18 June 2025, and all funded projects must be completed by 30 June 2026.
The goal of the programme is to encourage applications that target six key areas, including early detection of gambling problems, social and psychological impacts, gender-specific harm, and the connection between gambling and video games.
Moreover, the programme will also focus on areas that include the structural design of gambling products such as sports betting, poker, and lotteries.
This initiative comes amid increased regulatory action from the Spanish DGOJ. In May, the regulator issued €77.4 million in fines against 14 unlicensed gambling operators, including several €5 million fines, a €10 million penalty, and two-year bans from the Spanish market.
With this action, the DGOJ reaffirms its commitment to legal compliance and consumer protection as top priorities in its mission against illegal gambling and black-market operators.
Additionally, Spain also continues to expand its role by participating in partnerships with regulatory authorities, and this includes the DGOJ’s recent participation in the international forum hosted by the UK Gambling Commission.
On top of its responsible gambling efforts, the DGOJ also organized its first national anti-money laundering (AML) meeting with stakeholders from across the Spanish gaming industry earlier this year.
Those interested in applying can view the full details on the 2025 research grant, including application guidelines and eligibility requirements, via the DGOJ’s official website and the National Subsidy Database.
The legal framework for the current grant call is provided by Regulatory Order CSM/472/2022.
