Denmark Sets New Record by Blocking 178 Illegal Gambling Sites in One Go

The Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, has successfully blocked 178 illegal gambling websites in a single legal action — the highest number ever banned at once in Denmark.

The ruling was made by the courts in Frederiksberg, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against unlicensed gambling.

This effort is part of an initiative launched in 2012 to protect Danish consumers from unregulated betting platforms.

With this latest action, the total number of blocked websites now stands at 616 since the programme began. The Authority initially attempts to contact the operators of these sites to explain the legal violation and request they cease operations.

If these warnings are ignored, Spillemyndigheden collaborates with Danish internet service providers to seek a court order to block access.

Originally, the blocking process occurred once a year. However, due to the growing number of illegal gambling platforms targeting Danish users, the Authority now submits blocking requests to the courts twice annually.

In addition to blocking more than 170 illegal websites in Denmark, Spillemyndigheden continues to promote its responsible gambling initiatives.

This week, its national self-exclusion programme, ROFUS, reached a notable milestone with 60,000 individuals voluntarily signing up to exclude themselves from gambling activities in Denmark.

These efforts highlight the Danish Gambling Authority’s commitment to maintaining a safe and regulated gambling environment.

By cracking down on illegal sites and supporting problem gambling prevention, Denmark continues to set an example in responsible gambling regulation.
