Colombia’s Regulator Initiates Audit Following Controversial Lottery Jackpot Win

The Consejo Nacional de Juegos de Suerte (CNJSA), Colombia’s primary regulatory body for gaming, has announced the start of a formal audit into the Medellín lottery.

This significant decision was prompted by widespread public scrutiny following a highly publicized jackpot win of COP 16 billion (approximately USD 4 million)awarded to Luisa Jaramillo, the wife of the lottery’s now-resigned deputy manager, Rubén Callejas.

The investigation aims to meticulously examine the integrity and transparency of the recent lottery draw, directly addressing the concerns that have arisen due to the close familial relationship between the winner and a key lottery official.

The controversy escalated rapidly after the official broadcast of the draw almost immediately declared a jackpot winner, raising questions about the timing and circumstances of the announcement, particularly as it coincided with a Mother’s Month celebration draw.

In the wake of public outcry, Rubén Callejas resigned from his position within hours, and Colombian President Gustavo Petro publicly called for disciplinary and criminal authorities to investigate the matter, describing the situation as a “robbery.”

The Consejo Nacional de Juegos de Suerte’s special audit, led by a delegation from its Technical Secretariat, will travel to Medellín to clarify the conditions under which the draw was conducted.

This rigorous oversight is crucial for maintaining fundamental public trust in state-regulated gaming operations and sends a clear message about accountability within the industry.
