Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley, Michigan, was forced to evacuate its gaming floor on Tuesday afternoon after a portion of the roof collapsed over Sacy’s Restaurant.
Emergency services responded to the scene at approximately 2:30 p.m., with the collapse occurring ten minutes later. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the main gaming floor was reopened within hours.
Quick Action and Reopening
Casino officials acted swiftly, closing the restaurant and evacuating the area as a precautionary measure. According to the Bay Mills Indian Community, the gaming floor was deemed safe and resumed operations by 5 p.m., just two-and-a-half hours after the incident. The resort wasted no time getting back to business.
According to a Facebook post from the casino, four players hit jackpots shortly after the doors reopened, with one lucky winner taking home more than $15,000.
Investigation Underway
Preliminary investigations suggest the collapse was caused by broken roof trusses rather than snow load. Officials noted that maintenance staff had been actively conducting snow shoveling and preventative care prior to the incident.
Sacy’s Restaurant and the adjoining hallway remain closed while safety evaluations continue. “The roof collapse is not related to Bay Mills Resort & Casino’s ongoing expansion project,” officials clarified, referencing the $65 million development currently underway at the property.
Impact on Operations
While the casino floor is open, guests are being redirected to use a designated walkway to access the hotel. Additionally, a Comedy Club event scheduled for Friday, January 9, has been canceled. The resort is currently preparing for the grand opening of its expansion on January 30, which will add 134 new rooms, a spa, and a pool to the waterfront property.
