Nederlandse Loterij Chairman Alexander Pechtold to Resign

A 'For Hire' sign, representing the leadership vacancy at the Nederlandse Loterij after Chairman Alexander Pechtold announced his resignation.

Alexander Pechtold has announced that he will resign from his position as Chairman and member of the Supervisory Board of the Nederlandse Loterij, with his departure set for January 1, 2026.

The decision follows his recent appointment as the new Mayor of Delft, a role he is scheduled to assume in September of this year.

Pechtold had recently been reappointed for a second term at the request of the Ministry of Finance, which is the primary shareholder in the Dutch national lottery.

However, due to the significant responsibilities of his new political office, he has chosen to step down early to ensure a smooth leadership transition for the organization.

Since his appointment in April 2021, Pechtold has played a pivotal role in guiding the lottery through a period of significant change.

He was instrumental in reshaping the Supervisory Board and steering the company through the successful launch of the regulated online gambling market in the Netherlands.

During his tenure, he also oversaw the appointment of a new CEO and additional board members, while helping to solidify the lottery’s public position as a leading responsible gambling operator.

In a statement, Alexander Pechtold praised the company’s team and its forward-looking strategy, confirming that he will remain fully engaged in his duties until January to facilitate a seamless handover to his successor.

The council has expressed its regret over his departure, with member Frida van den Maagdenberg acknowledging his strong leadership and professionalism over the past four years. The search for a new chairman is currently underway.
