Spain’s gambling regulator, the Directorate-General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), has released its executive report for 2024, showing key trends in the country’s online gambling market.
According to the regulator’s numbers, nearly two million people were active players, reaching 1,991,550. This is a 21.6% increase from the previous year.
Of these players, men made up 83.15%, while women accounted for 16.85%. Most players, 85.7%, were between 18 and 45 years old.
On average, 953,182 people played each month, and players in Spain were active for about 5.74 months. However, the report also found that 21.9% of players were active for less than one month.
Betting had the most players, with 1,568,197 individuals, a 25.4% increase from the year before. The number of casino players went up by 29.2%, and poker players increased by 13%. In total, 52% of players only played one type of game, with betting and casino being the most popular.
Regarding how much players spent, the average online player in Spain spent €706 ($810) per year, or €13.57 per week. This average was based on data from online players, not the general adult population.
Men spent more on gaming annually (€740) than women (€538). Older players, especially those aged 46-55, spent the most annually at €1,146, while those aged 18-25 spent the least at €299.
Finally, 21.3% of players made a profit from gaming in 2024, with 5% winning net prizes over €489. Meanwhile, 35% of players reported spending more than €147.
These findings follow the 2024 State Online Gaming Market report, which showed a 17.6% increase in Spain’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2024, totalling €1.45 billion ($1.58 billion). Money deposited and withdrawn also increased, by 19.6% and 19.7% respectively.
In addition, the DGOJ report also showed that marketing spending went up by 30.4% to €526.3 million in 2024.
This suggests that while marketing might have helped increase the number of new players by 21.6%, this increase was not in line with the rise in marketing spending.
