The Spelinspektionen, the official Swedish Gambling Authority, has published a report from a survey it conducted towards the end of 2024 that reveals comprehensive data regarding gambling habits in Sweden.

The research is called the Public Opinion Survey and is powered by Enkätfabriken, a Swedish leading research platform, and it’s usually conducted each year for the purpose of examining the gambling patterns and habits of Swedes.

More specifically, the survey took place in November 2024, and it included 1,600 Swedish citizens.

According to the results from the report, 71% of Swedish gambling enthusiasts had used real money to gamble in the past 12 months, with 33% of Swedes reporting that they had played with real money every week.

When it comes to individual gambling entertainment, the most popular forms of gambling in the country are still number games and lotteries, with a staggering 84% of the respondents stating that they have participated in number games and lotteries in 2024.

Perhaps the most interesting data from the survey is regarding responsible gambling practices and whether operators are prone to taking responsibility when it comes to gambling problems and gambling-related issues.

Interestingly enough, 16% of those surveyed answered “yes, absolutely,” 29% of the respondents said “no, not at all,” and 55% of the participants answered “yes, to some extent.”

Furthermore, 66% of the participants said that they are aware of Spelpaus.se, a Swedish self-exclusion scheme, and they acknowledge its existence as a tool to disconnect from gambling.

When asked about the motivations behind why they gamble, 69% of the 1,600 surveyed by the Swedish Gambling Authority stated the main reasons as fun and entertainment, with 40% revealing that they gamble to win big.
