Referee Halts FC Tallinn and Maardu Linnameeskond Clash in the 78th Minute as Football Association Investigates Integrity Violations
An Esiliiga match between FC Tallinn and Maardu Linnameeskond was abandoned in the 78th minute due to suspected betting fraud. Following the incident, the Estonian Football Association (EJL) announced provisional bans for three individuals connected with Maardu Linnameeskond from all football-related activities while a formal disciplinary investigation is underway.
The inquiry targets alleged violations of disciplinary regulations, including breaches of integrity principles, direct or indirect participation in betting, pre-arranging match outcomes, and failure to fulfill reporting obligations. The fixture saw Maardu take a 2–1 lead early in the second half before conceding three goals within a seven-minute span alongside a penalty, prompting referee Jagnar Jakobson to halt the game.
The suspension marks only the third time an Estonian league match has been called off over betting suspicions, following similar incidents in the top division in 2013 and the Esiliiga in 2016, both of which were subsequently rescheduled. The EJL noted that abandoning matches remains an exceptional measure utilized to combat match manipulation when relevant intelligence is available.
The Estonian Football Association has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach toward match manipulation, emphasizing that swift provisional measures are critical to maintaining the integrity of the country’s professional tiers.
