A new international organization, the World Gaming and Betting Alliance (WGBA), has officially launched to serve as a global alliance for regulated gaming and betting operators, industry associations, and key stakeholders. The organization has appointed Maarten Haijer, who recently stepped down after more than 13 years as secretary general of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), to lead the body as its director general.
Establishing a global voice for regulated gambling
The WGBA has defined its core mission around promoting high standards of consumer protection, integrity, and transparency across international markets. Operating as a centralized hub for intelligence, data, and analysis, the alliance will highlight the benefits of well-regulated gambling while emphasizing the ongoing risks introduced by unlicensed operators.
By providing credible global insights, the organization intends to help regulators, policymakers, and industry members navigate complex debates through balanced, evidence-based research.
Although public awareness of the organization has been established, the WGBA will host its official formal launch in Geneva, Switzerland, this November, coinciding with the publication of its inaugural flagship report.
Executive commentary
Reflecting on his new role following a successful 13-year tenure at the EGBA, Maarten Haijer stated:
“At WGBA, we aim to unite the international gaming and betting community around the shared purpose of championing effective regulation, high industry standards, and evidence-led policy, so that gaming and betting can remain what it is for most adults: a lawful, safe form of entertainment.”
Haijer added:
“The global regulatory landscape is evolving fast. The case for well-regulated markets has never been more important, both for consumers and for the societies in which they operate. I look forward to engaging with regulators, policymakers and public health stakeholders to help shape the conversation on the global scale.”
Highlighting Haijer’s appointment, the WGBA shared via its official channels:
“Maarten brings extensive experience in gambling regulation, consumer protection and international trade, including thanks to his previous role at the EGBA, and earlier positions with the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Netherlands’ Permanent Representation to the EU.”
