Ontario’s regulated iGaming market continues to demonstrate remarkable momentum, with May 2025 marking another record-breaking month. According to the latest figures released by iGaming Ontario, the province generated CA$338 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR)—a 2.9% increase over April’s previous all-time high.

Notably, total player wagers climbed to CA$8.48 billion, highlighting the depth of player engagement and positioning Ontario as a clear market leader in North America’s online gambling industry.

The monthly performance was bolstered by the continued expansion of the province’s licensed operator base, now comprising more than 40 registered brands.

These operators span verticals including casino, sports betting, poker, and esports wagering, offering a comprehensive menu of digital entertainment options to Ontario’s gaming population.

📈 Player Activity Hits New Heights

In May, over 1.3 million active player accounts were registered with licensed operators, a slight yet meaningful uptick from April. The average monthly spend per user held steady at CA$260, illustrating not only healthy player acquisition but sustained engagement over time.

A spokesperson at iGaming Ontario commented:

Ontario’s regulatory model is maturing into one of the most stable and trusted iGaming ecosystems in the world. These figures reflect strong consumer confidence and the success of a well-managed rollout.

The province’s iGaming success is driven by several factors: an increase in live dealer offerings, improved mobile-first experiences, competitive odds and game margins, and an evolving focus on personalized marketing strategies using CRM and behavioural data.

🛡️ Regulated Success: A North American Blueprint

Launched in April 2022, Ontario’s legal iGaming market was the first of its kind in Canada and one of the most structured in North America. It has since become a reference point for regulators in other provinces like Alberta and Québec, who are now watching closely as they explore similar models.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and iGaming Ontario continue to emphasize responsible gambling, requiring all operators to offer self-exclusion tools, age verification, and real-time monitoring for high-risk behaviour. These safeguards are helping Ontario strike a balance between profitability and player protection.

🌍 Outlook: Expansion and Influence

Looking ahead, industry analysts expect the Ontario gaming revenue to keep rising throughout 2025, especially with global operators deepening their presence in the province. As new technologies like VR casinos and dynamic odds models emerge, Ontario is poised to stay at the cutting edge of iGaming innovation.

In a market once dominated by grey operators, Ontario’s commitment to regulatory clarity, transparency, and innovation has created a thriving environment for both businesses and players.

Ontario’s May performance not only reaffirms its leadership in Canada but sets a high benchmark for any jurisdiction considering iGaming regulation. The province isn’t just growing—it’s defining the future of regulated online gambling in North America.
