In a strategic bid to counter high data costs for players across sub-Saharan Africa, gaming operator Bola Group has officially launched an innovative, WhatsApp-based sports betting interface named Chatbet.

Powered by ChatLayer Media Technologies, the text-and-voice-driven platform aims to expand into Zimbabwe and Malawi following its initial rollout in Zambia.

Developed as a mobile-native solution, the group describes the messaging product as the first of its kind on the African continent.

Bypassing App Barriers via Conversational AI

The messaging solution is fully powered by ChatLayer Media Technologies. Through this specialized conversational framework, players can instantly receive live sports odds and place formal wagers simply by transmitting a standard text message or a direct voice note inside the WhatsApp interface. By integrating all transaction loops into a popular social app, the platform completely eliminates the need for standalone app downloads, external web browsers, or data-intensive graphic betting layouts.

Chatbet has been designed specifically for the distinct operational parameters of the African market, supporting betting lines across all major sports. The initial launch on WhatsApp rolls out the product to mobile users in Zambia, with consecutive deployment phases planned for Zimbabwe and Malawi. The technical development arrives as regional operators seek frictionless ways to scale user acquisition in markets where entry-level smartphone adoption is growing rapidly, but the high cost of mobile data packages remains a severe barrier to digital engagement.

Capitalizing on the Tenth World Cup Expansion

Bola Group Chief Executive Officer Hilton Hasson highlighted that Chatbet successfully bridges the gap between massive sports enthusiasm and local infrastructural challenges:

“Our teams have spent six months working on something that has never existed in Africa before. WhatsApp is already in everyone’s pocket, data costs make traditional platforms a barrier and sports betting in this market is still massively underserved digitally, and Chatbet solves all three. This is a huge step forward for sports betting in Africa.”

Hasson confirmed that launching the conversational interface right as the FIFA 2026 World Cup begins was a highly deliberate business decision, acting as a core customer acquisition engine for their regional sub-Saharan deployment:

“The fact that it launches as the World Cup kicks off is no accident. This is the biggest sporting event on the planet and we are the only operator on this continent where a fan can place a bet via a voice note.”
