State Representative Phillip Ensler (D-Montgomery) has officially launched his campaign for Alabama Lieutenant Governor, becoming the first Democrat to enter the 2026 race.
Ensler, who flipped a Republican district in 2022, is positioning himself as a candidate who will use the office’s platform, often seen as having limited statutory power, as a “bully pulpit” to advocate for major policy shifts, including the legalization of gambling.
Breaking the Stalemate
Ensler’s campaign announcement highlighted his frustration with the state’s inability to pass meaningful legislation on key issues. He emphasized that voters are tired of “culture wars” and want leaders focused on “solutions to real problems” like economic security and education.
Central to his strategy is the resolution of Alabama’s long-standing gambling debate. By using the lieutenant governor’s office to apply public pressure, Ensler aims to force a legislative breakthrough that would allow Alabamians to finally vote on a lottery and casino gaming.
A Competitive Field
Phillip Ensler is currently the only Democrat in the running, aiming to become the first from his party to hold the office since Jim Folsom in 2006. He faces a developing field of Republican contenders in what is expected to be a hotly contested election cycle. His platform also includes strong stances on gun safety, having previously championed a bipartisan law banning devices that convert semi-automatic weapons.
As the 2026 election approaches, Ensler’s “bully pulpit” approach signals a shift in how the lieutenant governor’s role might be leveraged to break legislative logjams, particularly regarding the contentious issue of gambling expansion.
