A historic French building with the national flag, symbolizing the regulatory framework implementing tighter identity verification for player protection and the France Self-Exclusion system.

L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), the unified gambling regulator for France, has officially launched a revamped online self-exclusion system designed to significantly reduce registration times while bolstering identity security.

The new digital platform simplifies the process for players wishing to block their access to gambling services, introducing a streamlined user journey that prioritizes rapid protection.

Under the new system, the first step for users involves digital identity authentication. To finalize their registration, players must submit a selfie via the identity verification provider IDnow.

Once this step is completed, a confirmation email is sent, and the ANJ states that the exclusion will become effective within a matter of days.

This technological update represents a major improvement in efficiency; the regulator notes that the redesigned tool shortens the effective registration time to just one day, a crucial development for individuals in immediate need of intervention.

The scope of the self-exclusion system of France is comprehensive. Once registered, a player is barred from entering physical casinos and gaming clubs, as well as accessing any online betting and gaming operators licensed by the ANJ.

Furthermore, the ban extends to the country’s monopoly operators, La Française des Jeux and Pari Mutuel Urbain. Any self-exclusion remains valid for a minimum period of three years.

Data released alongside the launch highlights the growing necessity of such tools. Since the ANJ assumed management of the system in 2021, the number of registered individuals has more than doubled, rising from 40,000 to over 85,000.

The regulator reported a 25 percent increase in registrations over the last two years alone, with 19,000 new sign-ups occurring last year.

Demographic analysis reveals that 77 percent of self-excluded individuals are men. Young adults aged 18-24 account for 23 percent of the total, while the 25-34 age bracket makes up 33 percent.

Interestingly, the ANJ noted that for registrants over the age of 65, the primary motivation for self-exclusion remains physical casinos rather than online platforms.

L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) Statement:

The redesigned tool simplifies enrolment, strengthens identity verification and shortens the effective registration time to one day.
