Norsk Tipping is facing a potential fine of up to NOK 10 million following a significant error in its Eurojackpot system.

The Norwegian Lottery Authority has issued a notice of violation after approximately 47,000 players were incorrectly notified of winning excessively large prizes on 27 June.

Of those affected, 30,000 received these erroneous notifications directly via SMS or push notifications.

The Eurojackpot error was attributed to a faulty formula that incorrectly converted Euro cents into Norwegian kroner, multiplying the amounts by 100 instead of dividing.

While the Eurojackpot draw itself was conducted correctly and the mistake was rectified quickly, the Norwegian Lottery Authority has criticised Norsk Tipping for its failure to identify the issue during testing and internal controls.

The authority has described the incident as a “serious breach of trust,” emphasizing that gambling operators are legally obligated to conduct their games in a fair and transparent manner.

This is not the first time the state-owned operator has faced compliance challenges. Recent incidents include a NOK 25 million erroneous casino payout, technical issues that prevented players from logging out of games, and long-standing lottery draw errors that distorted winning odds.

In response to these repeated failures, the Lottery Authority has announced an extensive inspection of Norsk Tipping’s lottery operations, including Lotto, Eurojackpot, and Vikinglotto.

The company has been given three weeks to respond to the notice before a final decision on the fine is made.
