The Swedish Court of Appeal ruled against the Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, in the legal proceedings that included Zimpler, one of the largest fintech payment providers.

As per the details of the lawsuit, the Swedish Gambling Authority issued an injunction back in July 2023, ordering the payment provider to cease providing payment services that contain BankID to online gambling operators that operate without a Swedish gaming license.

More specifically, the Swedish Gambling Authority claimed that by providing such payment services to unlicensed operators, Zimpler encourages unlicensed gambling and moreover, undermines the regulated gaming market of Sweden.

However, soon after the Spelinspektionen filed the lawsuit, Zimpler appealed the decision to the Administrative Court of Sweden, arguing that the Swedish Gambling Authority lacked the authority to order the injunction.

In May 2024, the Administrative Court ruled against the Spelinspektionen, supporting the claim that the regulator lacked legal grounds to order Zimpler to stop providing its BankID payment services.

This didn’t bode well with Sweden’s gambling regulator, who then took the case to the Court of Appeal. Yet, despite the appeal, the Court upheld the decision of the Administrative Court on the 7th of February 2025, thus completely rejecting the appeal of the authority.

As per the official ruling, the Court stated that the Swedish Gambling Authority didn’t have the authority to impose the initial order in its given form, thus allowing Zimpler to continue offering its services.

Since the start of the legal proceedings, Zimpler has already made significant changes in its responsible gambling policies and, as a result, has taken proactive steps to address any future regulatory concerns.

One of these includes the company’s plans, announced in May 2023, to immediately terminate business collaborations with any operators that lack a proper Swedish license and the approval the legally offer their services in Sweden.
