michigan regulatory crackdown

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has intensified its crackdown on the illicit gambling market by issuing cease-and-desist letters to three more online casinos: Cryptowins Casino, Slotland Casino, and Winaday Casino.

These operators were formally warned to immediately stop offering internet gaming services to residents of Michigan.

This action follows a clear pattern of enforcement by the MGCB, which previously targeted eight other major illegal gambling platforms last month, including Aussie Play, CryptoGames, and FortuneJack.

The regulator’s primary concern centers on consumer protection. Unlicensed, offshore casinos operate outside the legal framework, meaning they lack essential oversight and cannot guarantee that winnings will be paid out, putting Michigan players at significant financial and personal risk.

The state maintains that allowing these rogue sites to bypass regulations undermines the safety and credibility of its regulated market.

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized that Michigan law requires licensure to offer internet gaming, ensuring fairness and accountability for players.

The news comes as Michigan’s legal online casinos and sports betting platforms released their September financial figures.

Total gross receipts for the month reached $302.7 million, representing a slight dip of 3.1% from August’s figures. Sports betting saw a massive surge in engagement, with the total handle hitting $524.3 million, an increase of nearly 55% month-over-month, reflecting the start of the football season.

However, gross revenue from sports betting declined to $43.6 million (down from $49.27 million), and online casino receipts also dipped slightly to $259.1 million.

Despite the small monthly dip in revenue, the MGCB remains vigilant, making it clear that only fully regulated operators are welcome to do business in the state.

Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB:

Michigan law is clear—if you want to offer internet gaming in this state, you must be licensed. When unlicensed operators target Michigan residents, they’re not just breaking the law—they’re putting players at risk. Illegal gaming sites have no oversight, no consumer protections, and no guarantee that winnings will ever be paid out. We have a strong regulatory system in place that ensures games are fair, operators are accountable, and players’ information and funds are secure. When offshore or unregulated casinos try to bypass those rules, it undermines everything that makes our market safe and credible.
