Enforcement Action Highlights Ongoing Crackdown on Unlicensed Facilities and Digital Gambling Operations in South Africa
The Limpopo Gambling Board (LGB), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), arrested five individuals and seized 80 computers during a raid on an alleged illegal gambling operation in Phalaborwa. Authorities also recovered R3,210 ($195) in cash believed to be directly linked to unlawful gambling activities at the premises.
The joint enforcement operation was executed after the provincial regulator successfully secured a search and seizure warrant. Among those detained was a cashier working at the establishment, who was formally charged with operating an illegal gambling facility. The case appeared in court on September 23 and was subsequently postponed to October 21.
Crackdown Extends to Patrons and Unlicensed Digital Outlets
In addition to the staff member, four customers found gambling on-site were arrested and charged with participating in illegal gambling activities. Each customer was issued a R500 ($30) summons and subsequently paid an admission-of-guilt fine. This dual approach underscores the LGB’s strict enforcement strategy against both operators of unlicensed facilities and individuals participating in unlawful wagers.
The Phalaborwa raid highlights the growing challenge of illegal online gambling in the province. According to the LGB’s 2025/26 annual performance plan, illicit digital operations frequently disguise themselves as internet cafés in towns and shopping complexes, utilizing computer equipment while keeping server locations obscured. In response, the Board continues to partner with SAPS to disrupt unauthorized setups, echoing previous efforts that saw the confiscation of 127 computers during the 2022/23 financial year.
Following the operation, the LGB issued a public warning regarding the severe consequences of participating in unlawful betting, noting that a criminal conviction can negatively impact future employment and business opportunities. The Board remains committed to eradicating illegal gambling across Limpopo as part of broader national disruption efforts led by the National Gambling Board’s Illegal Gambling Task Team.
