Strategic refocus on World Pool and international commingling
Following a comprehensive business review, the UK Tote Group is realigning its core strategy to concentrate on UK and international horse race pool betting, with a primary emphasis on World Pool. Operating in partnership with key entities such as the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the British Horseracing Authority, and Horseracing Ireland, World Pool has delivered strong growth, expanding revenues by approximately 40 percent over the year. Double digit growth is projected to continue into 2027 as the international calendar expands.
Rising regulatory pressures and sharp tax increases contributed to the decision to reduce investment in the direct to consumer digital business, which has been operating at a loss. While online gaming content will be phased out, Tote.co.uk and Tote.ie will continue operating for pool and fixed odds betting, serving as testing grounds for new pool initiatives. The restructuring will involve some job losses in the digital division, partially offset by new roles created within the business to business sector.
Executive leadership transition
Alex Frost will step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer at the end of the year after leading the organization for nearly nine years. Frost oversaw the transformation of the Tote following its acquisition from Betfred, establishing key international partnerships including World Pool. He will serve in an Executive Director capacity throughout 2027 before moving into a Non Executive Director position on the Board.
James Coxon has been appointed as incoming Chief Executive Officer following a structured succession process. Coxon brings more than twenty years of industry experience across business to business and business to consumer environments, having held senior leadership roles at DraftKings following its acquisition of SBTech and serving as Chief Operating Officer at Gaming Innovation Group.
Reflecting on the leadership change, Outgoing CEO Alex Frost stated:
“It has been a great honour to lead the Tote through what has at times been an extraordinarily challenging backdrop for British racing and the wider betting industry.”
Frost added:
“The Tote is a special business and one I care deeply about. I am delighted to be staying closely involved and I look forward to playing my part in completing the journey we started nearly a decade ago to restore the Tote to its rightful position at the heart of British racing.”
Chairman John Williamson commented:
“We are delighted that he will continue to support the business, ensuring continuity as we build on the progress achieved under his leadership. We would also like to extend our congratulations to James on his appointment and to welcome him to the Tote as our incoming Chief Executive Officer.”
