Harry Kane has cemented his status among football’s all-time greats by winning the Ballon d’Or at a glittering ceremony in London.
The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker becomes the first English player to claim the coveted award since Michael Owen in 2001, joining an elite group of English victors that includes Sir Stanley Matthews (1956), Sir Bobby Charlton (1966), and Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979). Scotland’s Denis Law (1964) and Northern Ireland’s George Best (1968) remain the only other winners from the United Kingdom.
Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappe finished as runner-up, while Barcelona and Spain teenage sensation Lamine Yamal rounded out the top three. Reflecting on his journey, Kane told DAZN:
“Not many people would have thought it, and maybe even I wouldn’t have thought I’d be this far. I had to go through many ups and downs, especially early in my career. I was never the person that people thought was going to be the superstar like some of the guys now. I had to bide my time and work hard, a lot of times it was me against my own mind and I had to come through it, I had to show self-belief, determination.”
Record-breaking individual output
Kane’s historic triumph was underpinned by a sensational 2025-26 campaign. He scored 61 goals in 51 club matches, setting an all-time record for a Bayern Munich player in a single season, and finished with 73 goals and eight assists across 65 total appearances for club and country. His prolific domestic form included 36 goals to capture the Bundesliga golden boot, 14 goals in the Champions League, and 10 in the German Cup, featuring a decisive hat-trick in the 3-0 final victory over Stuttgart.
His overall tally of 73 goals places him in rare company, surpassed in European football history only by Lionel Messi’s 82-goal season in 2011-12. High-profile figures were quick to praise his achievement, with England manager Thomas Tuchel calling it a “huge honour” and Prince William hailing the striker as a “brilliant captain” and “remarkable player”. Notably, Kane also became the first Bayern player to win the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Winning without the biggest team prizes
Kane secured the Ballon d’Or despite falling short in football’s premier team competitions, having suffered semi-final exits in both the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup. His victory marks only the fifth time in the past two decades that the accolade has been awarded to a player who did not win the World Cup, Champions League, European Championship, or Copa America that season, joining an exclusive group alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Looking ahead, discussions have already turned to whether Kane can mount a successful defense next season, though challengers like Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe are expected to fiercely contest the crown.
