Leading Brazilian Betting Group Urges Consumers to Look Beyond the .bet.br Domain to Verify Regulated Operators
Marking National Online Betting Day, prominent Brazilian betting group Esportes Gaming Brasil has called for heightened consumer vigilance against fraudulent and illegal betting platforms. The group warned that while checking for an official .bet.br domain is an essential starting point, it should not be the only step bettors take to verify a legitimate operator.
Since January 1, 2025, only companies authorized by Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) have been legally permitted to operate nationwide, with licensed websites utilizing the designated domain extension. However, Esportes Gaming Brasil cautioned that illicit operators frequently mimic the names, branding, advertising materials, and social media channels of legitimate companies to deceive consumers.
The Seven-Point Consumer Verification Guide
Carol Luna, Head of Compliance at Esportes Gaming Brasil Group, emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the player experience, stating:
“.bet.br is the first filter, but security does not end with checking the domain. Consumers should look at the entire experience: who operates the brand, how their identity is verified, where payments can come from, which control tools are available and how customer support can be accessed.”
To help bettors distinguish authorized platforms from illegal sites, cloned pages, and fraudulent schemes, Esportes Gaming Brasil outlined seven key checks:
- Official Registry: Verify the operator against the official list provided by the SPA.
- Verified Channels: Access gaming platforms directly through verified links rather than relying on search engine advertisements or promotional pop-ups.
- Identity Verification: Confirm that rigorous identity verification procedures are enforced during registration.
- Payment Methods: Check that transactions are conducted securely through approved domestic banking and payment channels.
- Responsible Gambling Tools: Look for built-in player protection features, including deposit limits and self-exclusion mechanisms.
- Customer Support: Ensure clear, accessible, and responsive customer service channels are available.
- Unrealistic Promises: Remain highly wary of operators advertising guaranteed profits or offering ways to recover past gambling losses.
Identity Verification and Ongoing Player Protection
The group highlighted rigorous identity verification as a critical dividing line between regulated and illegal betting environments. Authorized operators in Brazil are legally required to authenticate bettor information using advanced security measures, including facial recognition with proof of life.
