Experienced Gaming Executive Steps In to Lead National Lottery Operator Through Its Next Phase of Growth and Digital Transformation
Allwyn UK has officially announced a leadership transition, naming gaming industry veteran Phil Walker as its interim chief executive officer. Walker will take over the reins starting September 7, stepping in as the company continues its ongoing search for a permanent successor.
The change follows the departure of outgoing CEO Andria Vidler, who has led the organization since October 2023, steering the business through the critical launch and early implementation phases of the Fourth National Lottery licence.
Reflecting on a Transformative Period for the National Lottery
Vidler’s tenure coincided with one of the most intense periods of operational and structural change in the history of the UK National Lottery. Having taken charge shortly after Allwyn secured the official licence, she oversaw major milestones, including substantial infrastructure upgrades across tens of thousands of retail partner locations, a comprehensive overhaul of digital apps and websites, and the successful migration of millions of player accounts.
While Vidler’s departure was reached by mutual agreement alongside Allwyn UK Chairman Justin King, she will remain on hand in an advisory capacity through the end of October to ensure a smooth and orderly handover.
Reflecting on her time at the helm, Vidler noted that transforming the national institution required immense commitment and focus from across the entire company, emphasizing that the foundational groundwork is now firmly established to keep delivering vital funding for Good Causes.
Phil Walker Brings Deep Commercial and Operational Expertise
Incoming interim CEO Phil Walker enters the role with extensive leadership experience across the digital gaming and sports betting sectors. His background includes serving as chief commercial officer at 888 (now evoke) alongside managing director roles for the UK and Ireland. Prior to that, he spent four years in senior leadership at William Hill, overseeing online and regional operations. Over the past two years, Walker has worked as an industry consultant and non-executive director, building a reputation for steering digital transformation and operational scale.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new appointment, Walker shared:
“I am excited and proud to be taking up the baton from Andria and joining such a vital national institution at this important stage of its growth journey. As a long-standing National Lottery player, I know first-hand the difference it makes to communities across the UK and this is a huge part of what attracted me to the role. It will be a real honour to help build on the progress already made.”
Allwyn Chairman Justin King also welcomed the appointment, highlighting that with initial transition milestones safely delivered, the organization is well-positioned to look toward the future, enhance digital innovation, and continue modernizing the National Lottery experience for players, retailers, and communities nationwide.
“Since Andria joined us, she has led from the front through an intense period of change, helping to complete the much-needed and long-overdue transformation of The National Lottery. With the major transition milestones delivered, now is the right time to look to the future and build on the solid foundations that have been laid to create a strong platform for future growth. We are pleased to welcome Phil as Interim CEO as we continue to modernise and strengthen The National Lottery for players, retailers and Good Causes On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Andria for leading this transformation with drive, focus and commitment, and I wish her every future success.”
Andria Vidler said:
“It has been a huge privilege to lead Allwyn UK through such an important period for The National Lottery. The last three years have required enormous focus and commitment from colleagues right across the business, and I am proud of what we have delivered together. Above all, I am proud that this work has helped strengthen The National Lottery’s ability to raise vital funds for Good Causes across the UK. But transforming The National Lottery is a marathon, not a sprint, and with the major transition now complete, and The National Lottery in a stronger position to keep delivering for the nation, this feels like the right moment for me to pass on the baton. I wish Justin, Phil and everyone at Allwyn the very best for the future — and look forward to becoming a player again myself.”
