Strategic Pivot Under Interim CEO Kevin McGurn Moves TMTG Away from Digital Asset Treasuries

Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of Truth Social, is pulling back from two major Crypto.com partnerships as new leadership shifts its primary focus back to its media core and a pending merger with fusion energy company TAE, interim CEO Kevin McGurn told Axios.

This strategic reset marks a sharp departure from previous leadership, which aggressively pursued crypto and financial services opportunities amid the 2025 crypto treasury boom. “We wanted to get focused,” McGurn stated, pointing out that the digital asset treasury market has grown increasingly saturated over the past year.

Termination of Trump Media Group CRO Strategy Venture

On Friday, Trump Media, Crypto.com, and Yorkville Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, announced they mutually agreed to terminate plans for the Trump Media Group CRO Strategy. Citing “prevailing market conditions and shifting business and stakeholder priorities,” the companies also decided against pursuing a previously announced services deal and related digital asset products. However, Yorkville America’s existing America First ETFs, branded as Truth Social Funds, will remain active.

The proposed venture would have licensed the Trump Media name for an enterprise built around Crypto.com’s Cronos blockchain and its CRO token, designed to accumulate a large CRO treasury and earn returns from holdings. When announced last year, expected funding would have positioned it as the “first and largest publicly traded CRO treasury company”. McGurn noted that asset staking has become less central for Crypto.com, making a directional shift logical, and emphasized that the decision was driven by competitive dynamics rather than regulatory concerns surrounding a Trump-linked company operating under the Trump administration.

Scaling Back Prediction Market Plans in Favor of Marketing Partnership

In a separate update, Trump Media and Crypto.com revealed they are scaling back plans to integrate prediction markets directly into Truth Social. Instead, the companies will transition to a marketing arrangement that promotes Crypto.com’s prediction-market products directly to Truth Social users.

Because the prediction-market space is already heavily crowded with established competitors, McGurn noted that handling backend infrastructure is no longer an efficient use of TMTG’s resources. Instead, TMTG sees greater long-term opportunity acting as a distribution and data partner rather than an underlying market operator.

Simplifying Strategy and Growing the API Business

These adjustments form part of a broader corporate effort under McGurn’s leadership to streamline operations and monetize Truth Social’s audience and data efficiently without requiring the company to custom-build every financial product.

Highlighting ongoing growth, McGurn shared that the company’s recently launched API business has expanded to roughly 10 customers, up from about five previously. These direct clients are primarily high-frequency trading firms leveraging platform data for algorithmic trading. Furthermore, news organizations and index providers are actively approaching TMTG, opening potential avenues for licensing deals with large language model developers and prediction-market platforms.
