TRCSL and Ministry of Digital Economy Enforce Immediate Restrictions Following Gambling Regulatory Authority Directive
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), operating under the Ministry of Digital Economy, has taken immediate steps to block access within Sri Lanka to 24 websites that have been unlawfully providing online gambling and betting services without the required licenses.
Regulatory Framework and Legal Enforcement
This enforcement action follows a formal notification issued by the Gambling Regulatory Authority—operating under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development—pursuant to the powers and provisions of the Gambling Regulatory Authority Act, No. 17 of 2025. Under Sections 15, 16, and 18 of the Act, any entity or individual providing or promoting online gambling services in Sri Lanka without a valid license commits an offense under Section 44. Consequently, the TRCSL instructed all local telecommunications service providers to immediately block access to the designated illicit websites.

In light of the crackdown, the Ministry of Digital Economy and the TRCSL have strongly urged the public to completely refrain from participating in or investing money through unauthorized online gambling platforms operating in violation of Sri Lankan law.
