YouTube will implement a policy update in mid-March that will ban content from “unapproved” gambling websites while at the same time enforcing restrictions for all gambling-related content.

The newly introduced policies by the largest video platform will tackle gambling content, with YouTube particularly targeting “unapproved” gambling websites with the goal of protecting US citizens from problem gambling.

The news about the crackdown, announced by CNN on Tuesday this week, will ban any content that directs YouTube users to “unapproved” gambling apps or websites, including content that includes images, links, logos, text, or verbal encouragement.

Moreover, the new regulations come just after YouTube updated its policies, which ban promotions of winnings from gambling. In detail, YouTube doesn’t allow the use of “sensational language” that entices users with gambling-related winnings, including content that promotes “guranteed returns” from “approved” gambling websites.

One of the most notable changes in the policies will be age-restricting underage users and users who haven’t verified their age from viewing gambling-related content. This means that those who are not of legal age and those who don’t have an account won’t be allowed to engage with content that promotes gambling at casino websites.

The main challenge for YouTube remains the enforcement of these newly-introduced policies, which is why the platform will most likely use the help of AI and similar automated tools that can proactively monitor the content released by users.

The age restriction policy is expected to be enforced starting March 19, 2025.

Boot Bullwinkle, a YouTube spokesperson, said that the company decided to change its policies in order to protect users from viewing “unapproved” gambling websites or apps:

We’ve strengthened our policies that prohibit content directing viewers to unapproved gambling websites or applications. We will also begin age-restricting content that promotes online casinos.
