New York kicks off 2025 with a bang, as the State Gaming Commission revealed that the first monthly sports betting handle for the Empire State reached a record-breaking $2.48 billion for the month of January.

This record comes after the state of New York surpassed the previous sports wagering handle of $2.34 billion in October 2024, marking the fifth month in a row where the state posts a sports betting handle that exceeds $2 billion.

Moreover, these figures from January and October bring the total betting handle for the fiscal year which is calculated from April 2024 to March 2025, up to a total of $19.5 billion from sports wagering alone.

In comparison, the total handle for the fiscal year 2023-2024 in New York amounted to $19.8 billion, a number that will very likely be surpassed this year, given that there are still two months to go in the current fiscal year.

When compared year-on-year, the betting handle in January 2025 increased by a whopping 23.9%, rising by $200 million when compared to the $2.28 billion wagering handle recorded in December 2024.

The wagering handle in New York for the past four months:

  • October – $2.34 billion
  • November – $2.27 billion
  • December – $2.28 billion
  • January – $2.48 billion

Furthermore, the New York State Gaming Commission revealed that the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for January 2025 amounted to $247 million, marking a 15.7% year-on-year and a 48.9% month-on-month increase.

From here, the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the past four months looks like this:

  • October – $176 million
  • November – $231 million
  • December – $150 million
  • January – $247 million

When it comes to the leading operators in the state of New York, FanDuel recorded a wagering handle of $965 million, noting the highest monthly handle of the 2024-2025 fiscal year to date.

This, along with the $111.3 million GGR of the current fiscal year so far, brings the total revenue of the operator to $817.8 million for 2024-2025.

Right behind FanDuel, we have DraftKings Sportsbook, which recorded a sports betting handle of $837.9 million for January 2025, along with a total revenue for the month of $81.98 million.
