SONAJA President Fernando Calderón noted that the industry is a major financial contributor, subject to a unique 12% revenue tax.

The Sociedad Nacional de Juegos de Azar (SONAJA) is intensifying its efforts to position Peru as a regional benchmark for player safety.

Through a series of structured training and awareness initiatives, the organization aims to improve the early detection of problem gambling while ensuring that the local industry operates within a secure and transparent environment.

Consistent Growth in Participation

Participation in these specialized sessions has seen a steady climb, with 683 people trained in 2025 compared to 562 the previous year. This growth reflects an increasing industry-wide demand for technical expertise in responsible gaming protocols. Starting in April, a new cycle of both virtual and in-person sessions will launch in collaboration with the Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo (MINCETUR).

Fernando Calderón, President of SONAJA’s Board of Directors, emphasized that these efforts are central to the sector’s identity:

“Responsible gaming is not only an institutional commitment but also a belief that inspires the development of our industry. We are committed to building the sector’s capacity, preventing problem gambling, and creating safe and regulated entertainment spaces for all gamers.”

A Highly Regulated Financial Pillar

Calderón highlighted that Peru’s gambling sector is among the most strictly supervised industries in the country. Operations are integrated into government systems in real-time, facilitating total transparency. Financially, the sector contributes significantly through a specialized 12 percent revenue tax, in addition to selective consumption taxes and municipal contributions.

Regarding the upcoming educational cycle, Calderón stated:

“In April of this year we will begin a new cycle of training sessions, both virtual and in-person, nationwide, with the aim of continuing to raise awareness and educate the various stakeholders involved. In this way, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing to promote concrete initiatives to foster a culture of responsible gaming in the country.”
