FairPlay Sports Media Confirms IT Security Incident Affecting User Accounts, Prompting Password Resets Across the Platform
FairPlay Sports Media (FPSM), the parent company behind the prominent betting odds comparison platform Oddschecker, has confirmed that the site was subjected to a data breach. Notifications sent to account holders revealed that an IT security incident compromised a limited part of the system, exposing personal user data including passwords, contact details, and dates of birth.
Despite the compromise, Oddschecker reassured users that it has not identified any evidence of data misuse, such as unauthorized phishing messages sent to personal email addresses. A spokesperson for FPSM told SBC News that the incident was swiftly identified, contained, and resolved without disrupting standard services, with the company actively liaising with users, partners, and relevant authorities, including the UK Information Commission’s Office (ICO). Users have been strongly encouraged to update their account passwords immediately.
Growing Cybersecurity Pressures Across the Betting and Gaming Sector
The breach underscores an escalating vulnerability landscape across the global iGaming and sports betting industry. Due to the vast amounts of personal and financial information processed by online bookmakers, casinos, and affiliate platforms, operators remain high-value targets for cybercriminals. Analysis conducted earlier this year by scam detection site ScamInfo.ai revealed that over 34.7% of identified “critical risk” websites were betting and gambling platforms.
High-profile cyber incidents have repeatedly impacted major operators globally. In the UK, Flutter Entertainment’s Paddy Power and Betfair suffered a major attack last year. North American markets have seen similar breaches, including a 2022 incident at BetMGM, the joint venture between Entain and MGM Resorts International, which compromised patron records.
Additionally, cybersecurity disclosures have sparked legal fallout, such as a lawsuit filed by an ex-employee against Boyd Gaming following an SEC-reported attack, alongside recent data compromise scandals affecting Betika in Kenya.
