Strategic Collaboration Aims to Support Rapid Growth and Safeguard Sports Betting Standards Across Africa’s Expanding Digital Markets
As Africa’s betting sector experiences unprecedented digital and economic expansion, sportsbook technology provider Altenar has highlighted the critical role of its partnership with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). According to the IBIA’s 2025 Sports Betting Integrity Report, utilizing H2 Gambling Capital data, total Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) across Africa is projected to surge from US$3.5 billion in 2021 to US$19.4 billion by 2030, with online betting alone accounting for US$16.4 billion.
Complementing this growth, 2026 research by GeoPoll across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda indicates that 95% of bettors utilize mobile devices, while 67% focus primarily on football. To ensure sustainable long-term development amid such rapid scaling, maintaining rigorous integrity standards and cross-border cooperation has become paramount.
Combating Integrity Risks in Fast-Developing Markets
The IBIA operates as a global not-for-profit association representing over 90 companies and 200 betting brands, utilizing its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform to track more than 1.5 million sporting events across 80+ sports annually. By joining this network, Altenar gains access to advanced intelligence-sharing tools that help identify and mitigate integrity risks as African regulatory frameworks evolve.
Jacob Portelli, Sales Manager at Altenar, stated:
“Africa is a market with significant potential, but sustainable growth depends on building trust alongside strong technology and commercial propositions. Integrity is a shared responsibility across the industry, and being part of IBIA gives Altenar the opportunity to contribute to that wider effort. We believe that combining our experience in sportsbook technology with the collective expertise of IBIA’s network can help support a stronger and more sustainable betting environment across Africa.”
Echoing this perspective, IBIA CEO Khalid Ali noted:
“The African market provides both opportunities and challenges for the regulated sector. While there is great potential for market growth, the dangers from unregulated operators and match-fixers threatens to derail progress. The regulatory landscape has undoubtedly improved in many areas but is behind world-leading jurisdictions such as Ontario and Alberta on betting integrity measures. Altenar, as with all of our members, has demonstrated a clear commitment to investing in integrity monitoring and reporting and is working closely with IBIA to bridge that regulatory gap in Africa.”
