Johann Graf, born in Austria on 3 January 1946, trained as a butcher and became Austria's youngest master butcher at 23. In 1974 he co-founded a business importing Belgian pinball machines for pubs and cafes, and in 1980 he began manufacturing gaming machines, founding Novomatic with starting capital of 50,000 schillings. Early success in the Swiss market from 1982 helped him build Novomatic into one of the largest integrated gaming-technology manufacturers and casino operators in the world, of which he remains the founding owner.
