The Dutch Gaming Authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has officially announced an intensive regulatory monitoring campaign targeting sports betting structures and promotional content ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Enforcing Strict Limits on Sports Wagering and Ads
To ensure compliance, the KSA has distributed formal directive letters to all domestic license holders detailing the strict application of regional laws. The regulator explicitly highlighted the total ban on untargeted advertising and promotional sports sponsorships across the country.
Furthermore, the KSA reminded providers that specific micro-betting markets remain completely prohibited under Dutch law; for instance, operators are barred from accepting stakes on player-specific yellow cards or tracking the first corner kick of a match. The KSA confirmed that any observed infraction will prompt immediate enforcement actions, including severe financial penalties and potential license reviews.
Concurrently, the authority is raising surveillance checks against unlicensed offshore platforms and will deploy public awareness campaigns highlighting sports betting risks to young adults.
Executive Mandate: Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups
Michel Groothuizen, Chairman of the Board of the Kansspelautoriteit, warned that corporate compliance must take absolute priority over seasonal marketing acquisition drives:
“We saw at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 European Championship that gambling increased. This makes it attractive for companies to attract new players during that period. While I understand this, I strongly urge providers to remain mindful of the protection of young adults and other vulnerable groups, and to adhere to the applicable rules. If we observe that this is not happening, we will take immediate action.”
